An American student came to the Hebrew University in 1947 for a year.  Caught up in Israel’s War of Independence she joined the underground Haganah defense forces, served as a medic during the siege of Jerusalem.  The letters which she wrote to her family during the incredible birth of the State of Israel in 1948 describe vividly her impressions and feelings and capture the historic events as they occurred.  These letters are compiled in the book, Letters From Jerusalem 1947-1948, a book that puts the reader of today on the scene.  The final letter form this book was published in an anthology: Letters of the Century that includes letters written by Mark Twain, Albert Einstein and John F. Kennedy.

“Zippy is the most engaging speaker I have heard about the Israeli fight for Independence,” claims Pam Solomon who heard a lecture while volunteering in Israel.  “She is engaging, authentic, upbeat and someone you want to know more about, while learning history in an entertaining way.”  Everyone will benefit from hearing the story of Israel’s birth from the memory of an 80 year-old spitfire, who remembers her teenage years fighting for Jerusalem like it was yesterday.
